Erectile Dysfunction Q&A

What is erectile dysfunction?

Erections happen during sexual arousal when nerves send chemicals that increase blood flow into the penis. Blood flows into the spongy muscle tissue of the penis, which then traps the blood. The blood pressure in the chamber of the penis makes the penis firm, causing an erection.

Erectile dysfunction is the inability to keep an erection that’s firm enough for sex. There can be many different reasons for this. Erectile dysfunction affects, on average, about 30 million men.

What are the causes of erectile dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction can happen as a result physical, emotional, hormonal, or pharmaceutical causes. While erectile dysfunction is more common as men age, growing old is not always the cause for erectile dysfunction. Some causes of erectile dysfunction include:

  • Being over age 50
  • Obesity
  • Chronic health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and high blood pressure
  • Smoking
  • Using drugs or drinking too much alcohol
  • Lack of exercise
  • Cancer treatment near the pelvis
  • Drugs used to treat other health problems
  • Injury or surgery in the pelvic area
  • Depression, anxiety, and stress
  • Worry about sexual performance

To diagnose erectile dysfunction, your doctor will ask you questions about your health history and will perform a physical exam focusing on the genitals. They may also order blood work and imaging tests.

What treatments are available for erectile dysfunction?

Most often, non-invasive treatments will be recommended first for erectile dysfunction. This may be in the form of oral medications or testosterone therapy if testosterone levels are low. Your doctor may also point out risk factors that can be modified, such as quitting smoking or switching to alternative medications that could be causing your erectile dysfunction.

Here at Nexus HealthSpan, we use a revolutionary new treatment called focused shockwave therapy (ESWT), to help treat erectile dysfunction. This treatment works by using focused shockwaves to improve blood flow to the penis and stimulate the growth of new blood vessels. Shockwave therapy has been shown in studies to have a high success rate in treating erectile dysfunction. Nexus HealthSpan advocated for the understanding of the differences between focused shockwave therapy and acoustic pressure wave therapy.

Another treatment for erectile dysfunction is the Priapus Shot®, or P-Shot®. The P-Shot® involves taking a sample of your own blood and separating its components and reinjecting an isolate from your own blood. This has been shown to promote healing and tissue regeneration, to help get and keep an erection, as well as to improving senstivity.
